WindEnergy Hamburg 2024, one of the world’s largest trade fairs for the onshore and offshore wind industry, will take place from September 24 to 27, 2024. This year, it promises to be a remarkable gathering, bringing together over 1,400 exhibitors and attracting more than 30,000 visitors from 100 countries. Among them, this event will count on the presence of Airborne Wind Europe and its members SkySails, and EnerKite, having all of them their own booth. Together they will highlight the transformative potential of Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) technology, paying also special attention to its applications on islands, off-grid communities and remote areas.
Airborne Wind Europe, the leading association for the European Airborne Wind Energy sector, was founded in 2018 with the mission to advance AWE systems across the continent. Representing all European manufacturers of AWE systems and over 50 institutions in the global supply chain, Airborne Wind Europe fosters collaboration among stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, and energy consumers. By advocating for a supportive regulatory environment and promoting innovation, the association seeks to establish AWE as a vital component of the renewable energy mix.
At WindEnergy Hamburg 2024, Airborne Wind Europe will present the latest developments in AWE technology, including real-world applications and upcoming projects on islands. Attendees can visit their booth in Hall B7, Stand 425, where a 40m² kite from Kitepower will be on display. Additionally, a “Speakers’ Corner” will host discussions on AWE’s future, providing valuable networking opportunities for industry professionals.
SkySails, a prominent member of Airborne Wind Europe, is recognised for its innovative approach to harness high-altitude winds using large kites. Based in Northern Germany, SkySails has achieved significant milestones, including validating the world’s first performance curve for AWE and helping to secure a place for AWE in Germany’s Renewable Energy Law (EEG). This legislative inclusion marks a groundbreaking step for the industry, offering a specific tariff of around 11 euro cents per kWh, highlighting policymakers’ recognition of AWE’s potential.
On the other hand, SkySails’ project in Mauritius exemplifies the practical application of AWE technology. Partnering with IBL Energy Holdings Ltd., SkySails has installed an AWE system connected to the grid, supported by the Mauritius Renewable Energy Agency (MARENA) and the Central Electricity Board (CEB). This project contributes to Mauritius’s goal of achieving a 40% share of renewables in its electricity mix by 2030.
At WindEnergy Hamburg 2024, SkySails will be present at booth 205 in Hall B6. The company will host several talks at the Speakers Corner in Hall 3, featuring insights from key team members, including CEO Stephan Wrage, on the transformative potential of AWE.
EnerKite, another leading member of Airborne Wind Europe, has been at the forefront of developing high-performance AWE systems designed for efficiency and scalability. The company’s flagship product, the EK100 system, is tailored for remote locations, islands, and off-grid applications. By capturing high-altitude winds, the EK100 offers a reliable and space-efficient renewable energy solution, making it an ideal fit for areas where traditional wind technology may be impractical.
For the first time, EnerKite will have its own booth at WindEnergy Hamburg 2024, located in Hall A3, Stand 672. The company will unveil a new system design and launch the pre-sale of the EK100, looking for making AWE technology widely accessible. A high-performance wing display will demonstrate AWE’s capabilities, providing a compelling visual of how this technology harnesses untapped wind resources.
One of the key highlights from AWE sector at WindEnergy Hamburg 2024 will be the focus on island projects. Characterized by limited space and high dependence on imported fuels, the islands are ideal candidates for AWE solutions. Projects like the one in Mauritius or the upcoming site in La Gomera in the Canary Islands demonstrate how AWE can provide sustainable, reliable, and cost-effective energy.
Airborne Wind Europe’s AWE sites map showcases active and planned projects worldwide, offering a glimpse into the potential of this technology. These projects not only prove AWE’s viability but also underline its role in achieving global renewable energy targets and reducing carbon emissions.
