Concept
The 2025 Greening the Islands International Conference marks the 10th anniversary of our global, multi-stakeholder event dedicated to island sustainability, taking place in Gozo, Malta, from 29-31 October.
Under the theme “Expanding Holistic Island-led Solutions to Drive Global Sustainability and Climate Action,” this milestone edition will convene a diverse array of stakeholders from island communities, international development and finance institutions, industry leaders, innovative solution providers, project developers, academia, and civil society from around the world.
Through exchange of expert knowledge and best practices, these diverse voices will cooperate to consolidate, replicate and scale the transformative ‘Island Model’. This holistic approach leverages islands’ unique features and abundant natural resources to achieve energy security and resilience, making them powerful catalysts for integrated sustainable development.
The model prioritizes future-proof energy systems that encompass advanced energy storage solutions, smart grids, digitalization, and e-mobility. Production is localized, demand-driven, and maximizes energy efficiency and resource valorization. It thoughtfully integrates offshore and marine renewable energies, through comprehensive and inclusive maritime spatial planning safeguarding delicate ecosystems.
Expanding from the energy core, this transformation extends across the entire island economy, addressing powerful intersectoral nexus and fostering circularity. It builds on profound connections with a sustainable blue economy, emphasizing the protection of biodiversity and community health through the One Health approach.
This framework promotes vibrant local value chains, the creation of green, qualified jobs, and fosters economic diversification, thereby securing the “right to stay” for the island’s youth and enhancing overall climate resilience while enabling resilient economic growth.
Participants will contribute cutting-edge insights and case studies focusing on the most pressing island-specific challenges and reaffirming islands’ leadership as laboratories for innovative solutions. Through dynamic thematic sessions and diverse expertise, the event seeks to strengthen the GTI Foundation network, foster new partnerships and increase awareness of innovative solutions and financing opportunities to accelerate islands’ sustainability journey.
The Conference champions the convergence of all small islands, beyond geographical and political boundaries, uniting them with countries and stakeholders committed to sharing knowledge and cooperating for their sustainable development, and who believe in their leadership as laboratories for global change.
Discussions and outcomes will be strategically aligned with the global climate agenda, notably the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS), the Nice Ocean Action Plan, and the lead-up to COP30. Recognizing the accelerating impacts of climate change on islands, the conference will drive concerted action for ambitious renewable energy, climate resilience, and comprehensive sustainable development strategies, inspired by island leadership.

This pivotal session will directly confront climate change as a complex, existential threat facing all small islands, irrespective of geographical and political boundaries. This critical challenge serves as the key driver for accelerating a holistic sustainable transition, fundamentally shaped by the implementation of the transformative “island model” – a powerful engine of replicable change. Featuring island governments and global leaders from institutions, industries, and civil society, this session will emphasize islands’ role as climate dialogue leaders. With the Mediterranean as a prime example of their pioneering efforts in driving energy security and resilience, the session aims to inspire concerted global action in the lead-up to the upcoming COP30 UN climate talks.

The session will feature two panel discussions offering a comprehensive deep dive into the technical and strategic pathways for achieving 100% renewable energy systems, the cornerstone of the “island model”.
Panel 1: The 100% RES Initiative – Frontrunner islands leading the way
This panel, led by GTI Foundation, will showcase the progress and experiences of frontrunner islands actively pursuing the 100% RES Initiative. Stakeholders from islands, utilities, academia and the industry will highlight policy frameworks and implementation strategies to realize the socio-economic benefits originated by ambitious energy transitions, describing the most pressing challenges requiring concerted solutions, and demonstrating the tangible achievements of islands on the climate frontline.
Panel 2: Future-proofing energy systems: Innovative, island-led grid & storage solutions
Drawing on cutting-edge research and compelling case studies from the H2020 EU project MAESHA, this panel will delve into the methodology for integrating 100% renewable energy in islands’ power grids. Experts will explore the essential requirements for dynamic grid flexibility (enhanced by digitalization and advanced monitoring tools), the role of diverse energy storage solutions (including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), long-duration storage, and small-scale hydropower), and the critical integration of e-mobility (including vehicle-to-grid technologies) and maritime electrification (such as ship-to-shore power). The discussion will focus on enabling localized, demand-driven production for more reliable and less expensive energy systems, including through emerging island energy communities.

9th edition of the GTI Awards
As part of the 10th GTI Conference, the Greening the Islands Awards recognize and disseminate the most innovative projects that demonstrate an integrated sustainability approach.
All island projects worldwide are allowed to participate including programmes, initiatives and policies that engage the community at large as well as the different island stakeholders in a multisectoral approach.
