The GTI Observatory Summit is the annual gathering of its leading Committees: the global leaders of the islands’ sustainable transition. This operative multistakeholder meeting aims to collect feedback on key initiatives, refine flagship documents, and steer the Observatory strategy ahead.
The second edition will take place in October 2024 on the Caribbean island of Curaçao, a frontrunner in the 100% RES Islands Initiative, to discuss islands’ representation at COP29 including a side-event and deliverables for dissemination. Furthermore, the Summit will feature a first-of-its-kind workshop involving development finance institutions, international investors and industry leaders to deep dive the island’s roadmap to 100% renewable power by 2035, identified in close cooperation with the Curaçao Government and local stakeholders.
This public-private dialogue will represent a unique opportunity to showcase the technologies needed and the investment potential, directly engaging key actors on the projects identified to tackle the requirements to make them a reality. Participants will offer contributions and recommendations, supporting the island in implementation, financing, and enabling nexus with other sectors, such as water, agriculture, mobility, and waste. Sessions will be interactive, with open debates guiding the gathering of joint outcomes. Other islands will be invited to leverage the Curaçao case study.

Day 1 – Thursday 10 October
The morning session will be dedicated to the GTI Foundation’s 100% RES Islands Initiative, a global program aimed at supporting islands to transition to fully renewable energy, with a view to valuing the nexus with sectors such as water and mobility. In particular, the session will explore how the initiative can scale up and pipelines of projects be built to attract public and private funds to islands.
The afternoon session will focus on islands’ representation at COP29, including the concept of a side event and deliverables for advocacy and impact, pivoting on a vision of small islands as ideal testbeds for showcasing the technical and economic feasibility of transitioning to 100% renewables in the context of a global goal of tripling renewable capacity by 2030. The day will be closed with a technical site-visit to an under-construction wind power plant on the island.
Day 2 – Friday 11 October
In the morning, following high-level governmental input, a technical workshop will dive deep into Curaçao’s roadmap to 100% renewable power by 2035 and the necessary steps to achieve concrete progress, involving key local public and private stakeholders, international investors, development finance institutions, and industry.
From examples of local projects, success cases and barriers, to international best practices, the main focus will be placed on how to catalyse financing for implementation and accelerate Curaçao’s transition. Input will be gathered, and, in the afternoon, key outcomes will be identified to inform the island’s action plan to implement its roadmap.
The GTI annual event is in cooperation with the Caribbean Energy and Climate Conference, which will be held in the same venue on the 7th, 8th, and 9th of October

About the Caribbean Climate & Energy Conference
The second edition of the Caribbean Climate & Energy Conference is scheduled for October 2024 in Curaçao. Building on the success of the inaugural event in Aruba in 2023, this conference is crucial for fostering collaboration, exchanging knowledge, and initiating concrete steps to address climate change resilience both regionally and globally.
In close cooperation with the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, Curaçao is fully prepared to host this significant event.
