Project Objectives
The Anbalaba Foundation – Fostering a Sustainable and Entrepreneurial Community
The objectives of The Anbalaba Foundation are designed to create a measurable and lasting positive impact on the environment, the local economy, and the social fabric of Baie du Cap.
A. Environmental & Ecological Objectives
Biodiversity Restoration: To increase the population of endemic plant species by establishing a 5-acre mini-forest, aiming for a minimum of 90% endemic species composition within 3 years.
Ecosystem Resilience: To enhance soil stability and water retention on the Domaine d’Anbalaba property, aiming for a measurable reduction in surface water runoff and topsoil loss within 2 years of project initiation.
Coastal Protection: To mitigate coastal erosion for the shoreline below the residences by establishing a robust root system from the mini-forest, with progress monitored through annual geotechnical surveys.
Promotion of Sustainable Agriculture: To establish and maintain productive community gardens using 100% organic and pesticide-free methods, serving as a model for bio-farming in the region.
Waste & Resource Management: To implement a greywater recycling system that reduces the estate’s consumption of fresh water for irrigation by at least 50%.
B. Community Empowerment & Economic Objectives
Entrepreneurial Capacity Building: To equip a minimum of 15 family units with fundamental business literacy and venture-creation skills through the 8-month “Family Venture” incubator program per cycle.
Local Economic Stimulation: To launch at least 5 new micro-enterprises or green start-ups originating from the “Family Venture” program within the first 18 months.
Enhancing Food Security & Sovereignty: To provide 14 beneficiary families with the skills, resources, and land access to grow their own organic produce, thereby reducing their food expenses and increasing nutritional intake.
C. Educational & Social Cohesion Objectives
Environmental Stewardship from Youth: To instill principles of environmental conservation in 50 children annually through the “Young Guardians” workshop series, measured through pre- and post-program assessments of their knowledge and attitudes.
Fostering Intergenerational Learning: To strengthen community bonds by facilitating collaboration between youth and adults in both the “Family Venture” program and the community gardens.
Creating a Shared Platform for Growth: To successfully host a bi-annual Anbalaba Community Fair that attracts over 200 attendees, effectively showcasing project outcomes, facilitating knowledge exchange, and uniting the entire community around shared sustainability goals.
By achieving these objectives, The Anbalaba Foundation will solidify its role as a catalyst for a sustainable, prosperous, and interconnected future for Baie du Cap.
Project description of activities and specific interventions
Building on the core principle of Domaine d’Anbalaba—deep integration with the community and environment of Baie du Cap—this proposal outlines the central role of The Anbalaba Social Community (Anbalaba Foundation). This foundation will be the central body to coordinate all stakeholders (residents, local community, investors, and management) in implementing a holistic sustainability and empowerment program.
Our vision is to transform Baie du Cap into a model village where environmental stewardship and economic self-sufficiency are driven by an empowered local community.
2. Proposed Project Pillars
The Anbalaba Social Community (Anbalaba Foundation)’s work will be organized around three interconnected pillars:
Pillar 1: Youth & Adult Empowerment through Entrepreneurship
Project: The “Anbalaba Family Venture Program”
This is a structured 8-month incubator designed to foster business literacy and innovation within the community, strengthening family bonds in the process.
- Format: A bi-weekly mentoring program for parent-child teams.
- Curriculum: Progressive modules covering:
- Financial Literacy: Understanding basic finance, budgeting, and keeping a simple business ledger.
- Idea Generation & Validation: From identifying local needs to creating a viable business concept.
- Green Start-ups: Focusing on sustainable business models that align with the region’s ecological values.
- Pitching & Presentation: Learning to communicate ideas effectively.
- Community Engagement: The program will culminate in a “Venture Fair” where participants present their ideas to the community and potential local investors.
- Sustainable Model: A symbolic participation fee of 500 MUR per family will be charged to ensure commitment and contribute to the program’s long-term sustainability.
- Resources: Engagement of business developers, mentors, and educators with a forward-thinking, pedagogical mindset.
Pillar 2: Environmental Education for the Next Generation
Project: “Young Guardians of Baie du Cap” Workshops
A series of regular, interactive workshops for children focused on practical environmental conservation.
- Workshop Topics:
o Recycling & Upcycling: Turning waste into useful products.- Ocean Discovery & Protection: Understanding marine ecosystems, the impact of pesticides, and promoting alternative marine activities.
- Ecological Gardening & Permaculture: Hands-on learning in the community gardens.
- Smart Fishing Practices: Education on sustainable fishing methods.
Objective: To instill a deep-seated ethic of environmental responsibility from a young age.
Pillar 3: Integrated Ecological Systems
This pillar focuses on tangible, on-the-ground projects that create a circular economy within Domaine d’Anbalaba and benefit the wider community.
- 3.1. Endemic Forest & Permaculture Integration: (not started yet)
- Transform the landscape of the entire development (villas, apartments, eco-lodge, commercial center) into a thriving ecosystem of endemic plants and food forests using permaculture principles
- 3.2. Community Gardens & Bio-Farming: (just stared, in progress…)
- Establish dedicated plots for community gardens, accessible to both village residents and Domaine d’Anbalaba homeowners.
- The produce will supply the Station A restaurant and future eco-lodge with fresh, pesticide-free food.
- Integration of Bee Hives: Install apiaries to promote pollination, enhance local biodiversity, and potentially produce “Anbalaba Honey.”
• 3.3. Greywater Recycling System: (currently implemented during construction)
o Implement a centralized system to treat and recycle greywater from all project components (villas, apartments, hotel, commercial centre).
o The recycled water will be repurposed for landscape irrigation.
3. Implementation and Governance
• Oversight: The Anbalaba Social Community (Anbalaba Foundation) will be responsible for the management, funding, and execution of all projects.
• Stakeholder Board: A governing board will include representatives from the Domaine d’Anbalaba management, the foundation, local community leaders, and resident volunteers.
• Phased Roll-out: Projects will be launched in a phased approach, starting with the community gardens and children’s workshops, followed by the entrepreneurship program and larger infrastructure projects like the greywater system.
4. Conclusion
This comprehensive proposal solidifies Domaine d’Anbalaba’s role as a committed and transformative actor in the Baie du Cap region. By empowering The Anbalaba Social Community (Anbalaba Foundation) and implementing these pillars, we move beyond a real estate development to create a self-sustaining, educated, and ecologically resilient community, truly embodying the ethos of “holistic, island-led solutions.”
