Greening the Islands Foundation and Blue Planet Alliance Join Forces To Deliver a Global Framework To Support 100 Islands To Commit for 100% Renewables

GTI and BPA unveiled the 100×100 Campaign at New York Climate Week

On Friday, 26 September, during the Blue Planet Alliance side event at New York Climate Week, Greening the Islands (GTI) Foundation together with Blue Planet Alliance presented a new global initiative: the 100×100 Campaign.

The campaign is a landmark effort aimed at enabling at least 100 islands worldwide to commit to 100% renewable energy by 2030, supported by comprehensive roadmaps and expert guidance. Through this coalition, the promoters aspire to help island achieve full renewable energy transitions by 2045 or sooner, ensuring resilience, self-sufficiency and sustainable development.

“Islands are on the frontline of climate change, but they are also proving grounds for the solutions the world needs. After years of work with islands around the world, together with Blue Planet Alliance are creating a space that was previously absent, a global framework with clear objectives and concrete roadmaps. The 100×100 Campaign ensures that islands are not left alone in their journey, but supported by a coalition that can truly turn ambition into reality,” said Gianni Chianetta, Chair of Greening the Islands Foundation.

Island leadership and wisdom are absolutely crucial for driving the global energy transition. Islands, with their unique vulnerabilities and innovation potential, can serve as powerful catalysts to inspire the world. Through close collaboration with strategic partners and key stakeholders, we can turn bold commitments into meaningful action. The newly launched 100×100 Campaign, in partnership with the Greening the Islands Foundation, is committed to working hand-in-hand with every island and nation worldwide—accelerating the journey toward 100% renewable energy,” said François Rogers, Executive Director of Blue Planet Alliance.

100×100 Campaign

Unlike existing approaches, the 100×100 Campaign brings together two international organizations with a proven track record into a single, holistic framework.

  • For the first time, islands are connected to governments, institutions, industry, finance, and civil society under one globally coordinated, trusted and action-oriented structure.
  • Combining the GTI’s technical know-how and observatory-based monitoring with BPA’s fellowship and peer learning model, the campaign delivers a full package of tailored support.
  • Islands’ pledges are backed by clear, actionable roadmaps that enable them to commit with confidence, while avoiding short-term project fragmentation.
  • The campaign directly addresses well-known barriers such as fragmented policies, short-term planning, lack of finance and limited local capacity.

Turning ambition into action

The 100×100 Campaign is not just a pledge, it is a process. Through this initiative, islands that join become part of:

  • The Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Program, for peer learning and policy exchange.
  • The GTI 100% RES Islands Initiative and Observatory, for tailored roadmaps, technical support and also monitoring
  • A broad ecosystem of partners providing financing, technology, and knowledge.

Stakeholders worldwide are called on to contribute resources, expertise, and political backing. This collaborative model ensures that island transitions are planned, financed and delivered, rather than left as aspirational targets.

The announcement at New York Climate Week marks the beginning of a global journey. The official launch of the campaign will take place at COP30 in Brazil, where the initiative will be presented as a major step forward for global climate action led by islands. The campaign will also be a headline feature at the upcoming GTI International Conference in Gozo, Malta, further reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of global island sustainability efforts.
