Greening the Islands is Proud to Partner Once More with UN DESA for a Side Event at SIDS4 Focused on Accelerating Islands’ Energy Transition

The GTI Foundation’s side event at the 4th UN International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) was officially approved in the official program.

The event, co-organised with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), is titled “Small Islands Leading the Energy Transition: Roadmaps to 100% Renewables” and will offer an exceptional deep dive into islands’ energy transition.

SIDS4 is scheduled for 27-30 May 2024, in Antigua and Barbuda. The GTI-UNDESA side event will take place on Wednesday, 29 May, inside the conference venue at the American University of Antigua (14:00-15:30 AST, Room 4).
The event will be a key moment for Greening the Islands to present the first roadmaps within the 100% RES Islands Initiative and showcase the crucial role of renewable energy for islands’ sustainability and resilience.

The session will feature two panel discussions involving high-level representatives from governments, global industries, and international institutions, with a focus on technological aspects, regulatory and policy barriers, as well as on the key issue of access to finance.

Greening the Islands is proud to share the draft agenda and announce the confirmed speakers:

  • Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General UN DESA & Secretary-General SIDS4 Conference
  • Francesco Corvaro, Special Envoy for Climate Change Italy
  • Franceau Aubret Grandcourt, Chief Commissioner Rodrigues Regional Assembly

The side event will build on the outcomes of a side event co-hosted by UNDESA and Greening the Islands Foundation at COP28.

The Greening the Islands Observatory and its Committees members had already identified the energy transition as a key pillar for islands’ sustainable development.
