BELÉM, BRAZIL – November 11, 2025 – A groundbreaking partnership was announced today to accelerate the energy transition in the Caribbean island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The agreement confirms St. Kitts and Nevis’ commitment to achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030, with the target of developing a comprehensive Integrated Resource Plan through the Greening the Islands (GTI) 100% RES Islands Initiative. The program involves the engagement of a local multi-stakeholder committee and the cooperation of global partners from industry, development finance and international institutions.
GTI Foundation will deliver a comprehensive road map to 100% renewable energy, working closely with the Government and the utilities to ensure the successful achievement of this ambitious target.
This comprehensive technical and financial study is financially supported by the European Union through the EUROCLIMA programme — an EU initiative under the Global Gateway investment agenda — the EU’s strategy to boost sustainable and trusted partnerships worldwide.
In the Caribbean, Global Gateway focuses on accelerating the green and digital transitions, including through closer cooperation on renewable energy to boost investment in the sector. The funds will be channeled to St. Kitts and Nevis through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The announcement was made at the COP30 side event “100×100 Global Launch: 100 Islands, 100% Renewable, Determination Beyond Hope”, co-organised by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, Greening the Islands Foundation, Global Solar Council, and Blue Alliance at the Global Renewables Hub in the Blue zone.
As COP30 kicks off, this multi-stakeholder agreement sets a precedent for the rapid and integrated delivery of climate finance to Small Island Developing States (SIDS), matching ambitious commitments with credible technical frameworks and comprehensive roadmaps, while avoiding further expenditures or new debt for these countries.
It also underscores the importance of early-stage funding to enable Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and other islands to develop their Integrated Resource Plans, and de-risking their pathway toward 100% renewable energy systems (RES).
Achieving 100% RES will not only secure energy at affordable costs and drive socio-economic growth, but also allow islands to transform from import-dependent economies (for fossil fuels, food, and other goods) into net exporters through excess renewable energy production.
Crucially, such an agreement stands as a flagship case study under the 100×100 Campaign: 100 Islands for 100% Renewables, demonstrating that with political will and coordinated technical and financial support, the path toward a full energy transition can be significantly accelerated.
The partnership between St. Kitts and Nevis, Greening the Islands, and the European Union through EUROCLIMA demonstrates how the Global Gateway can catalyse strategic cooperation between public and private actors to deliver real progress toward the global clean energy transition.
