During the Kuwait Sustainable Energy Week, Greening the Islands (GTI) and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation and expedite sustainability initiatives across islands and remote areas in the Mediterranean and MENA regions.
This partnership aims to:
- Support island decision-makers and communities in strategizing for renewable energy and environmental sustainability.
- Foster dialogue and the exchange of best practices, positioning islands as laboratories to scale up climate action and drive the transition to 100% renewable energy.
- Extend the “island model” to remote locations, enabling energy independence and resilience through distributed renewable energy systems, both off-grid and interconnected.
Gianni Chianetta, Chair of GTI, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, “This MoU reinforces our shared mission to advance decarbonization, innovation and collaboration, positioning islands and remote areas as frontrunners of the global energy transition.”
Grammenos Mastrojeni, Senior Deputy Secretary General at the UfM, “This MoU reflects our shared understanding that islands are not isolated, they are cradles of civilisation and pioneers of sustainability. By enhancing cooperation across the Mediterranean, we can scale the solutions islands offer in energy, water, mobility, waste, agriculture and tourism for the benefit of the region beyond.”
This alliance marks a pivotal step in leveraging the unique characteristics of islands to drive sustainable development and climate resilience on a global scale.
