On 17 July, Gianni Chianetta, Chair of the Greening the Islands Foundation, participated in the SIDS Platform event hosted by the International Solar Alliance (ISA) during the Seventh Regional Committee Meeting (RCM) in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The high-level session brought together regional stakeholders to explore tailored solutions for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the context of the global energy transition.
During the panel, Chianetta highlighted the strategic importance of digitalisation in accelerating the energy and sustainability transition of islands and referenced GTI’s very own Web App which serves as a hub for forums, webcasts, private messaging, and a digital library. He also introduced the GTI Digital Platform, an ecosystem designed to support island stakeholders through a range of tools set to launch next year; which aims to boost collaboration, innovation, and knowledge-sharing across island communities worldwide.
In addition, Chianetta presented the 100% Renewable Energy (RES) Islands Initiative, an ambitious GTI-led programme helping islands transition to fully renewable energy systems. He also announced a new cooperation between GTI, ISA, and the World Bank: a strategic alliance set to enhance support for islands at a global scale.
In his role as Board Member and Secretary of the Global Solar Council, Chianetta additionally presented global solar pricing trends, highlighting how solar has become highly competitive with diesel, especially relevant for remote island grids seeking affordable, clean alternatives.
This intervention reaffirmed GTI’s commitment to placing islands at the forefront of the clean energy revolution, leveraging innovation, partnerships, and digital transformation as key enablers.
