The Greening the Islands (GTI) Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of GTI Academy, a new strategic pillar dedicated to capacity building, applied knowledge and peer-to-peer learning islands navigating the energy transition.
Building on over a decade of hands-on experience supporting islands worldwide, GTI Academy has been created to address one of the most persistent challenges facing island governments and utilities today: the gap between political ambition and the technical, financial and regulatory capacity required to deliver a resilient, bankable transition.
As a first step, GTI Academy will roll out a year-long series of high-level thematic workshops, replacing the traditional single annual conference with a more continuous, targeted and impact-driven approach to knowledge sharing.
From ambition to implementation
Islands are often at the forefront of climate and energy challenges, facing the complex task of decarbonising isolated grids while ensuring security of supply, affordability and resilience to extreme weather. In many cases, the challenge is not a lack of commitment, but the need for integrated expertise that connects technology choices, grid operations, financing, regulation and social inclusion.
GTI Academy workshops are designed precisely to bridge this gap. Structured around GTI’s 100% RES Islands Holistic Methodology, the programme guides participants through the full lifecycle of the transition; from strategic planning and scenario design to technology selection, grid modernisation, financial structuring and long-term resilience.
A modular, practical learning format
The workshop series will follow a modular format combining concise technical inputs with real-world case studies and interactive discussion. Each session will focus on a specific dimension of the island energy transition, including strategic planning and 100% RES roadmaps, renewable generation technologies tailored for island contexts, storage strategies including long-duration storage and green hydrogen, market design and access to climate finance, policy and regulatory frameworks, operations and resilience in marine environments, energy communities, smart grids and the energy–water–waste nexus.
Beyond technical capacity building, these set of workshops aims to foster a global community of island practitioners, enabling the exchange of experiences, lessons learned and replicable solutions. Participants will benefit from exposure to GTI’s international network of experts, institutions and financial actors, strengthening collaboration and accelerating implementation on the ground.
With GTI Academy, the Greening the Islands Foundation reinforces its commitment to supporting islands not only as conveners, but as trusted partners translating strategy into action.
Further details on the first GTI Academy workshops will be announced in the coming days.
