The GTI Observatory is proud to announce a new significant step towards a strengthened structure. During a plenary meeting of the leading Committees of the Observatory on March 7, the members elected Chairs and Vice-Chairs.

Island Advisory Committee

      • Chair: Sainivalati S. Navoti, Chief of SIDS Unit, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA)

      • Vice-Chair: Joseph Borg, Chairman INSULEUR (Network of Insular Chambers of Commerce and Industry of the European Union)

    Strategy Scientific Committee

        • Chair: Marit Brommer, CEO International Geothermal Association & Vice President Global Renewables Alliance (GRA)

        • Vice-Chair: Vanessa Toré, Chair of the Integrated Water Resources Management Committee and Member of the Steering Committee of the Global Water Partnership – Caribbean

Sai Navoti said, “2024 is a very important year for Islands. On 27 to 30 May 2024, the International Community will gather in Antigua and Barbuda for the 4th International Conference for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), where World Leaders are expected to adopt an intergovernmentally agreed, focused, forward-looking and action-oriented political outcome document setting out the Sustainable Development Agenda and priorities of SIDS, for the next decade. I am convinced the Committee will, going forward, better identifies islands’ challenges and priority needs and continuously explore innovative solutions and disseminate best practices for islands’ circular economy, into the next decade.”

Marit Brommer said, “I am excited to Chair the Strategy Scientific Committee, with my passion for science, research and technology and personal dedication to fostering collaboration and excellence. Only through collaboration we can achieve our goals, drive meaningful initiatives, and contribute to the success of the Greening the Islands. I am eager to bring my energy, experience, and vision to this role, and I look forward to the opportunity to work with all members.”

Joseph Borg said, “The role of the Island Advisory Committee is to identify islands’ challenges and priority needs with a focus on the circular economy. Given my involvement within INSULEUR, including as a President of this organisation for the past five years, I can bring competencies and experience to this committee. On various instances I have spoken about the importance of islands becoming more sustainable, and on the difficulties being faced by islands because of the impacts of climate change. However, I have also highlighted how islands can provide the ideal tests beds where sustainable solutions are tested, providing also a positive impact on the local economy and creating new employment opportunities.”

Vanessa Toré said, “I am motivated as Vice-Chair of the Strategy Scientific Committee because of GTI’s commitment to advancing sustainable transitions for islands worldwide. With my extensive background in international economic development and government policy, I understand the importance of uniting stakeholders and issuing policy recommendations to drive sustainable change. I am eager to contribute to the Observatory’s agenda by leveraging my skills and experiences to support its members’ strategies and advance sustainable transitions on islands globally.”

The Island Advisory Committee is responsible for identifying islands’ priority needs, while the Strategy Scientific Committee is responsible for addressing such needs and matching them with innovative solutions.

Chairs and Vice-Chairs will ensure transparency and consistency of the Committees’ debates and decisions, facilitate the engagement of the Committees and their contribution to setting the Observatory’s priorities, participate in periodical meetings and provide feedback on the Observatory’s work.

Greening the Islands welcomes this remarkable news and congratulates the elected members, whose first key assignment will be supporting the Observatory in the lead-up to the 4th UN International Conference on SIDS.
