GTI Observatory Report – Islands at a Crossroads: Rethinking tourism for environmental and economic sustainability

The GTI Observatory Report is a comprehensive work that looks at the main challenges faced by islands along their decarbonization path, analysing sector by sector the problems with a focus on technology, policy, and finance. With the involvement of the Observatory members and partners, it identifies the most innovative and sustainable solutions and presents the latest good practices. This month, we focus on Sustainable Tourism. The Report also includes Water, Energy, Transportation, Agriculture, Waste, and Air quality. Tourism is the primary economic driver for many islands, but also presents unique environmental challenges. Mass tourism enormously affects these vulnerable ecosystems, highlighting the urgent need for solutions that minimise environmental impact while maintaining economic momentum. Furthermore, islands’ reliance on fossil fuels to manage electricity peak demand during the high season significantly contributes to pollution and costs. The challenge of seasonality in tourism exacerbates these environmental issues, as islands struggle to balance the influx of visitors during peak seasons with the efficient use of resources like energy and water, and the management of waste.
