NESOI Plus: Empowering Island Energy Communities Across Europe

A Fresh start for Europe’s Island Energy Transition

The next chapter in Europe’s Island energy journey has begun. On 7–8 October 2025, the consortium partners of NESOI Plus gathered in Venice, at the M9 Museum, to officially launch the new phase of the New Energy Solutions Optimised for Islands (NESOI plus) initiative.

Building upon the success of the original NESOI project, which supported over 70 island energy transition projects across Europe, NESOI Plus is set to bring targeted tools, training, and investment support to empower island energy communities, particularly in the EU Outermost Regions.

Over the past years, NESOI has demonstrated that islands can act as catalysts for the EU’s clean energy transition. Now, NESOI Plus aims to expand this legacy by creating a One-Stop-Shop for sustainable island energy development.

This integrated platform will offer:

  • Technical and financial assistance for project preparation
  • Reference materials and tailored tools for island-specific needs
  • Matchmaking opportunities between local projects and investors
  • Training and capacity building for communities and municipalities

In addition, NESOI Plus will test its model in three pilot Outermost Regions:

  • The Azores (Portugal)
  • The Canary Islands (Spain)
  • Martinique (France)

Two open calls will be launched to select up to 30 local projects. These pilots will help refine the One-Stop-Shop services to address diverse local contexts and ensure replicability across all EU islands.

NESOI Plus aims to empower bottom-up energy communities and support islands in turning their local ambitions into investment-ready concepts.

By focusing on bottom-up initiatives, local empowerment, and knowledge sharing, NESOI Plus supports the EU’s vision of a just and inclusive energy transition. The project’s emphasis on capacity building and community engagement ensures that small island territories can lead by example — shaping energy systems that are not only sustainable but also locally driven and economically beneficial.

NESOI Plus brings together nine partners from five European countries, combining technical, financial, and regional expertise to deliver practical, scalable solutions. The consortium includes:
