GTI Observatory

Where citizens, governments, corporates and academia come together to match islands needs and innovative solutions.

At the 2018 GTI international conference of Minorca, the GTI Observatory was launched, resulting from the need to give continuity to scientific exchanges that, until that time, had only taken place annually, and to support the origination of projects through task forces and reports, to promote public-private collaboration, develop policy recommendations, identify financing opportunities, creating coalitions for tenders, while engaging all relevant stakeholders.

The GTI Observatory Global Index was also launched to assess and monitor islands progress towards sustainability. More recently, GTI has even extended its project to assist islands obtain a recognized sustainable tourism certification.

The Observatory’s core pillars

We unite the island stakeholders’ voices at the regional and global level, issuing policy recommendations for decision-makers to advance islands’ sustainable transition.

We continuously explore innovative solutions and disseminate best practices for islands’ circular economy with a focus on technology, policy and finance, supporting our members’ strategies through reports and events.

We generate multiple opportunities for our members to meet up, learn from each other, strengthen cooperation through networking & coalitions for projects, and together contribute to the Observatory’s agenda.

GTI Observatory Structure

Island institutions, companies and associations, academia, international institutions, innovative solution providers, industry associations and other stakeholders from the globe committed to the circular economy of islands will have the opportunity to take part in on-line meetings, reports, workshops, webinars, etc. to originate projects for the self-sufficiency and sustainability of islands.

GTI Observatory Summit

The GTI Observatory Summit is a strategic gathering dedicated to advancing the pivotal role of small islands as laboratories for global sustainability.

The Summit brings together a diverse and influential group of participants composed of stakeholders from the GTI Observatory network and key partners of the Greening the Islands Foundation, including:

Representatives from leading international development institutions.

Providers of innovative sustainable energy and climate solutions.

Civil society organizations working on climate and development issues.

Academics and researchers focused on island sustainability.

Policymakers and government officials from island nations and territories, remote locations, and beyond.

Experts from relevant sectors including water desalination and treatment, waste management, green tourism, and more.

Industry leaders in renewable energy, grid technology, and energy storage.

Following the first edition in Gran Canaria in 2023 and the second in Curaçao in 2024, participants gather in Gozo for the GTI Observatory Summit 2025 to contribute to shaping a sustainable future, learning from the innovative spirit of islands, and driving global change. GTI Observatory’s stakeholders will have multiple opportunities for networking and exchange with innovative solutions providers gathered in Gozo for the 10^th GTI International Conference, taking place on 29^th and 30^th October 2025. The Leading Committees of the Observatory will present the main outcomes of the Summit to the Conference audience in the opening session.
