The 100% RES Islands Initiative

Islands are ideal case studies to showcase the technical and economic feasibility of transitioning towards 100% renewable energy systems, starting from the decarbonization of the power sector.

A global initiative that aims at accelerating the complete decarbonization of islands. Islands are ideal case studies to showcase the technical and economic feasibility of transitioning towards 100% renewable energy systems, starting from the decarbonization of the power sector. GTI aims at identifying concrete projects with the involvement of an Island Multi-Stakeholder Committee (IMSC) to engage local communities on each selected island.

Frontrunner Islands

The 100% RES Islands Initiative was officially inaugurated and launched at the Climate Week NYC event in September 2023. The islands of Tonga, Curacao and Rodrigues have been selected as the official frontrunners, their roadmaps will be presented in cooperation with UN DESA at the upcoming 2024 SIDS Conference this May.

Island interested to join the initiative

Some islands have already shown interest and GTI plans to present the first case studies at the GTI Observatory Summit 2024 while bringing intermediate findings at COP 28.
