Greening the Islands Foundation

Showcasing Airborne Wind Solutions to Power Islands at WindEnergy Hamburg 2024

WindEnergy Hamburg 2024, the global on- and off-shore wind event, was an exciting platform for the renewable energy sector where Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) made a significant impact due to its dynamic presence and the activities carried out. Airborne Wind Europe (AWEU), as the leading European association representing the AWE sector, was successfully engaged with over 300 visitors at its stand, showcasing the potential of the technology, particularly for island communities.

One of the pivotal topics at AWEU’s stand was the transformative potential of AWE for island communities. With its capacity to harness strong winds at high altitudes, Airborne Wind Energy presents a groundbreaking solution to reduce dependence on diesel generation. This technology offers a more sustainable, cost-effective, and reliable energy source, addressing the notable challenges faced by remote areas. Visitors came over to learn about these benefits and the opportunities that this technology unlocks for a greener future.

A standout feature of AWEU’s participation at WindEnergy Hamburg 2024 was its own Speakers’ Corner. This space served as a hub for knowledge sharing and industry discussions, featuring a series of 15 presentations over the course of the event. These sessions, conducted by AWEU members and the association itself, covered various aspects of AWE, from technological advancements to policy implications and market opportunities. On average, four presentations were held each day, generating significant interest from attendees willing to get deeper into the regulation and future of AWE.

In addition to AWEU’s stand, some Airborne Wind Energy developers, also AWEU members, showcased their cutting-edge technologies and projects at dedicated booths throughout the fair:

  • The AWEU booth featured Kitepower’s impressive 40m² kite and fruitful discussions on the future of AWE and its innovative applications. The large-scale kite pulled up on the top of the booth attracted a diverse audience, highlighting the practical and scalable nature of AWE systems.
  • SkySails Power presented significant advancements in AWE technology development also setting up a real kite on the top of its stand. In their presentations they pointed out, among other stuff, the industry’s first validated performance power curve and they also shared updates on their successful efforts to include AWE into Germany’s Renewable Energy Law (EEG), demonstrating their commitment to integrate this technology into the mainstream energy mix.
  • EnerKite unveiled a new system design and announced the pre-sale of the EK100 system, a high-performance wind energy solution. This launch highlighted EnerKite’s dedication to push the boundaries of AWE technology and flagging its access for commercial deployment.
