Solar energy is the most accessible, scalable, and rapidly deployable renewable resource for islands. However, successful strategies must look beyond simply selecting the right photovoltaic (PV) technology. Islands require a holistic “enabling environment”, a delicate alignment of spatial planning, robust regulatory frameworks, and advanced grid integration mechanisms to ensure that the growing share of variable renewable energy does not destabilize their isolated grids.

Island decision-makers face complex challenges that hinder the expansion of solar PV installations. These include spatial constraints, steep and inaccessible terrain, the imperative to protect fragile ecosystems, worsening extreme weather phenomena like hurricanes, and the seawater corrosion of marine environments.

This session dives deep into the comprehensive ecosystem necessary for high penetration of solar in island grids. Experts will introduce innovative technologies and configurations specifically designed for land-constrained territories and engineered to resist extreme weather and harsh coastal conditions. Crucially, the session aims to bridge the gap between technical planning and execution by detailing the policy instruments, regulatory requirements, and grid-integration strategies needed to deploy both utility-scale and distributed solar assets without compromising the island’s environmental harmony and grid stability.
